The Communities of Baker County have pulled together, and have come to the aid of one family.
A parade from the high school to Heritage Park, followed by a BBQ cook-out and a Bake Sale. All for the benefit of Milton Johnson and his family.
"Nothing could top hearing Milton's Mom break down crying because she was overwhelmed with everything that was happening and the realization of how many people care about Milton." Says Cindy Mangiafico, parent of Milton's Team Mate Ray.
"It was so touching that I think everyone on the stage area had tears in their eyes. I know she already expressed this before, but I imagine the continued efforts touches her heart."

New Security System Makes Bank Safer

..Posted on 18 Aug 2008

There is a lot more going on at the First Federal Bank's front door than customers passing through can see. It is quietly keeping the Macclenny bank safe.
"All personel in the bank feel safe, customers that come in feel safe," said Market Manager Dana Wood.
That's because the entrance itself uses locking doors, sensors, and cameras to detect for weapons.
If the system detects a weapon, an alarm beeps at the teller window and the bullet proof inner door into the bank will not open.
The teller can then talk to a person who might look suspicious before they let them enter.

My family and many of our friends still call Macclenny home, and we get the Home Town Journal every week so we can keep up with what's going on.

Killer Kangaroo Seen in Baker County (reprint)
|
|
..Posted on 13 Dec 2007
|
Ah, a trip down memory lane.
Came across this story some months back in the archives of the Baker County Press. Thought I’d submit the story for our newer readers. The original story was run in March or April of 2002.
Killer Kangaroo Seen In Baker County
[edit: Though the actual story carried full names, the resubmission below uses only first names, with exceptions of sources of reference.]
Skunk Ape, Swamp Monkey, Bandersnatch, Bugger, Killer Kangaroo
All are names ascribed to strange and exotic animals people claim to have seen in various parts of the South and South America. The last one was given to a creature that at least three people say they saw in recent months north and south of Glen St. Mary.
The Killer Kangaroo
Either the sightings of an enlarged and more frightening version of the Australian marsupial as described by those who claim to have seen it is a hoax perpetrated by people who hang around the EZ Stop Food Store north of Glen, or there’s something to it. “I know people think I’m nuts, and that’s why I never said anything to anyone at first,” says Mark, who swears he saw the creature cross in front of his car on CR 125 just north of I-10 near the power lines.
“It was a Saturday morning in late January about 1:30. I went to the Exxon [now Citgo] at I-10 because I ran out of cigarettes. I was on the curve and there was a ground fog. I saw this animal moving from east to west across the road, and at first I thought it was a person, and then I said to myself, “It’s a kangaroo!”
Mark said the animal was 5-5 ½ feet tall and standing on thick, muscular hind legs. Startled by the headlights, it dropped onto short front legs and ran into woods off the west shoulder. “It was more like it lunged,” recalls Mark. “I wasn’t believing what I saw so I doubled back over to Taber Blvd. and turned south back to the power lines. I sat there thinking it would cross Taber heading west. I never saw it again, and I got spooked just sitting there. Something told me to go on home.”
And this is where the E-Z Stop comes in. Mark said he kept the sighting to himself for fear of being ridiculed until one morning at the store he frequents for morning coffee. Judy, also of Glen, was behind the counter that morning about a month ago. Mark spilled the beans about the creature and she didn’t say much. He sensed she was affected by his tale, which he didn’t expect her to believe anyway. “She was acting weird and then she just kinda blurted it out: ‘I saw that thing too!’”
Convinced they saw the same animal, and they weren’t crazy, the two enlisted the help of afternoon clerk Darcy, an amateur artist. Based on what turned out to be remarkably similar recollections of the animal’s appearance, Darcy sketched out a likeness on a white paper bag.

IMHO -- The Tongue of the People

The Tongue of the People
Having gone through the educational system that is offered by law, and taking a few extra years at a Community College, I consider myself one who has a fairly capable grasp of the English Language (and also one who remembers what a Thesaurus is used for). Though never having any works professionally published, I’ve oft considered myself a freehand at poetry, prose, and fiction, even having attempted the National Novel Writers Month Competition last November. My friends and family are at times peeved by my corrective attempts when someone commits a grammatical faux pas.
There was a time when the above attributes were admirable. Certainly, looking at the spokesmen of yore, one could take pride in proper diction. Henry, Lincoln, Roosevelt--all men known for memorable speeches and a firm command of the English Language. Though a shock at the time, it became a moment of paramount history when the sacred word of Scripture was translated in the 17th century to English. There are many languages in existence, each with their own nuances and benefits; For a time, though, there was no culture who took more pride in their spoken language than those who spoke English.
Well, it’s time to throw all of that away, I guess.
Merriam-Webster, the dictionary publisher, releases the “Word of the Year” every year, which, in modern times, have been cultural adaptations that have been used by the populace in greater demand. Last year, for instance, portmanteau enthusiast Stephen Colbert was quoted for using the word ‘truthiness’ in a satirical piece; later, this word would be accepted as the “Word of the Year”. As a comedian of sorts, Colbert’s ability to speak and use words is above part from the average person. Based on his credentials as a speaker, it would be at least tolerable to accept a hybrid word such as ‘truthiness’ as a celebrated example of our language (which is, after all, the purpose of the “Word of the Year”, sponsored by a dictionary publisher).
This year, getting more to the point of this article, the word has been chosen. “What would it be?” asked devotees of the spoken word. “Would it be a cultural identifier, such as ‘embrace’, or perhaps a word synonymous with courage, such as ‘steadfast’?” Maybe the word would remind us of current events, such as the recent Broadway strike, with ‘theatrics’.” At the very least, such aspirants would expect the word to be real.
Well, let the rioting begin. The word of the year this year is “w00t”.
Rhymes with “suit”, except with numbers in the middle.
That’s right, ladies and gentlemen, the word of the year consist of letters and numbers. To those reading this who are unfamiliar with this concept (bravo, dear reader), the past eight years or so has saw a revolution of online gaming, or a culture literally based around playing games online. Because, as anyone would tell you, multitasking is very hard, the youth of this day and age, with no respect for a cultural language over 600 years old, has affixed the language with a dialect called, and I am not making this up in the least, l33t-sp33k. (Pronounced leet-speak, rhymes with “meat-speak”.)
Leet-Speak (I refuse to use those numbers if I can) is based on the following concepts:
- Substituting numbers in place of letters looks cool.
- Illiteracy is cool.
- Considering proper grammar as outdated and dumb is cool.
That’s the best I can consider. The ‘reasoning’ behind 1337-5p33k, as it usually appears, is that, while playing games, the least amount of time typing in communiqué, the better chance of survival (winning). However, as anyone who can type can verify, typing numbers generally slows down the ability to fluently type, thereby going contrary to its spoken purpose. Honestly, the concept of leet-speak seems to be an attempt of coup against the English Language. It is nothing more, in all honesty, than an attempt to subvert and conform the language to what they want.

Growing by Leaps and Bounds

Wanting to get away from the rat race of a large city like Jacksonville, Florida, my family decided about 12 years ago to move 30 miles to the west to a small rural community called Macclenny. Not many people ever went to Macclenny, unless it was to drive on Interstate 10 to the rest of the United States.
Although there are a lot of pitfalls to being in a small community, the city of Macclenny has seen tremendous growth during the last 10 years. People claim that they are moving to this small town in an effort to escaped the crime and violence in Jacksonville. You can move here, and still be within a 30 minute drive of downtown Jacksonville, and be within a 45 minute drive of the beach. While the population of Macclenny itself is around 4400, the county as a whole has a population of 25, 200. There is countless amounts of land to be used for housing an commercial growth.
On the commercial side of real estate, Macclenny is booming. Many commercial business have been drawn into the area. CVS built a pharmacy as of last year. Within the last two months, we have received a Super Walmart, a Zaxby's fast food restaurant, an Elliano's coffee shop, two sandwich shops and a Walgreen's pharmacy. A Starbucks coffee shop will be opening in the next two months. As this is being written a department store, two restaurants, one hotel and one check cashing service is being built. Within the next two years, there will be a Lowe's hardware store a new Target department store, another hotel, an upscale restaurant., and a gas station. Within the next ten years, a developer has plans to build 5,000 new homes t the west of the city. In addition he will be adding a Publix Grocery store another pharmacy, a new hospital, school, and police station and a Cracker Barrel restaurant.

"Fortunately, once we got some of the kinks worked out, we were able to keep up."

A Storm was brewing in Bradford County. But it wasn't points that rained down, it was yellow flags.
The Wildcats couldn't seem to keep things together in their 12-7 victory over Bradford. As they found themselves in a flurry of the yellow stuff.
Several big first down plays were called back due to penalties, and over 10 flags were thrown during the game.
If a 40-6 win against Union County "Was not even close to good enough" for Coach John's, you can be certain he won't be happy with the outcome of this game.

The Wildcats are gearing up to face Bradford County.
The Wildcats were "Tornado Proof" last year defeating Bradford by a score of 22-8.
For the second consecutive game, the Wildcats will face a team with a new head coach.
The new Skipper for the Tornadoes, is Coach Steve Hoard.
One look at his team and he can see the offense is not quite on the same page. The offensive line lacks experience and the defense may have to rely on a few young guys in the secondary: Sophomore Robert Boswell & Freshmen Tramaine Harris and Adrian Mosley could be the starters.

Wildcats Win Classic 44-7

The Wildcats defeated West Nassau by a final score of 44-7 on Friday night.
The Wildcats dominated much of the action, gaining over 300 yards of offense in 2 1/2 quarters and holding West Nassau to less than 100.
One would think that even with these kinds of numbers there would be cause for praise. But the 2nd year Head Coach thinks otherwise.
"Not that we played bad, but we definitely did not play like a playoff team...It seemed like we weren't moving the ball very well at times and I was very disappointed with our execution of our running backs."
Coach Johns is a firm believer in that his running backs should also provide pass protection and have the ability to block as well as run.
"If my backs aren't willing to be good blockers and fake well, they can not play for me. We must improve in that area."

IMHO—The world of Customer Service

IMHO—Welcome to the world of Customer Service
By: J. Harding
We’re all pretty familiar with the concept. We have a problem with something, such as a computer or a service, and so we need to get help from a representative of said service. Already, those of you familiar with the Customer Service routine can see a flaw in the above equation. Representative being that flaw.
Now this is not a complete across-the-board deal, wherein every single CSR we deal with is inept and lacking basic common sense. In fact, working with business-oriented companies (who tend to have a slightly higher degree of competency in their representatives) rarely puts me in insanity’s path. But there have been obvious exceptions, or else I wouldn’t be writing this.
(At this point, I’m going to assume if there are any readers who are, indeed, Customer Service Representatives (CSR) of any kind that they do make up the exception and do not reflect the following descriptions. However, you may very well be such, to wit, please do not work for a company I will eventually call for help. Thank you.)
I’ve also learned, at least in the business world (although I’m sure this is a global rule too), that if a company is either government-run or –funded, then their comprehension abilities would be about two points above a piece of granite. The following will be a classic example, as what happened to me today.
(Names have been removed/changed to protect the stupid.)
Part of my responsibilities where I work involve transferring files to vendors and making sure they not only receive them, but that their services with us ‘work’. The following conversation took place today:
Me: (Makes first call)
Company: Thank you for calling [Company Name]. Our number has recently changed. Please hang up and call 1-800-###-####.
Me: (Kind of weirded out that they actually asked me to “hang up” and call this number, but does so anyhow. Makes second call.)
Company: Thank you for calling [Company Name]. (Normal schpiel about pressing one and two and three, until they get to zero for operator).
Me: (Presses 0).
Company: (an actual person). Thank you for calling [Company]. How can I help you today?
Me: Hi, my name is Jack with [My company]. Our contract ID is #####. I have a question concerning a file we transfer to you.
Company Rep 1: What was that Contract ID again?
Me: #####
Rep 1: Hmm. That doesn’t seem to fit, what I need is a four digit number, a dash, and another digit.
Me: (Pause. That equals 5 digits… like I’m giving you… Oh well). Oh, well, I don’t have a number that matches that. Can you look us up by name?
Rep 1: Sure, what was that name?
Me: [My company, again…]
Rep 1: Hold on. (The very hated hold music. I’m afraid I’ll never talk to her again. Two minutes later, she surprisingly comes back on) Ok, I have your information here. How can I help you, again?
Me: (sigh) I need to speak to someone in file transmissions that handle (file type), please.
Rep 1: (file type) department? I think that’s handled by (another person).
Me: Oh yeah, I’ve talked to her before.
Rep 1: Great. Do you need her number?
Me: Yes, that would be great.
(Rep 1 proceeds to give me her number. I take it down and thank her, hanging up)
Me: (Makes Third Call to woman who can hopefully help me. Get her voicemail—she’ll be out all week. Her message gives me her department’s number, but says it so fast I have to call back two more times to write it all down. Meanwhile, she has 3 voicemail messages from me that are just the sound of the phone hitting the cradle. Makes Fourth Call to the number she left me! (keep that in mind.) )
Company: Thank you for calling … (Automated Message #3, by the way. I get to press 0 eventually)
Rep 2: Thanks for calling [Company]. My name is [Person]. How can I help you today?
Me: Hi, yes, I was hoping to speak to someone in (type of file) department.
Rep 2: (type of file)? I’ve never heard of that before.
Me: (Isn’t this the number the lady gave me?) [Spells it out, describing the file and the department I need, along with the problem—that their system is not updating their information included on the file].
Rep 2: Could you please hold? I’ll call tech support.
Me: Ooooo-k.

IMHO - Getting Old

A Computer Guy looks at 23.
By: J Harding
The world as we know it has changed the rules once again. In particular, the one that I’ve now realized is this: What is considered ‘old’ is now a lot younger.
I feel old. I’m 23. This isn’t right.
When I was a kid, I thought old was at the very least 35, but in honesty, closer to 50. You weren’t old old until well into your 60’s or possibly even 70’s. But the reason I, and no doubt all the other kids my age then, thought that was our conception of old. The big technology was color TV, cable stations, and the personal computer. Therefore, ‘old’, by definition, was a generation that wasn’t used to such gadgetry. My parents had grown up when TVs were common, albeit smaller and not necessarily color, so they weren’t too old. My grandparents, however, didn’t have TV’s, and therefore, were very old. My parents were a little old, because they didn’t have computers or cable stations growing up. So that defined young, old, and older.
Taking the above situation into account, that meant that ‘old’ was my parents age when I was a kid/preteen, late 30’s to early 40’s. Apparently, however, this is all changing. The new ‘old’ is reaching its icy, horrid hand into the 20’s range, as what is considered ‘last generation’ is changing all the more rapidly. This realization, that what we grew up knowing and doing is dying, hits everyone, and it hit me today.
I was watching television with my wife this morning. Murphy Brown was on, a show I watched when I was very young and even a little bit as I closed into the double-digits on age. Lately, they’ve been showing shows from the late 80’s and early 90’s on Nickelodeon-owned channels, but not necessarily Nick-at-Nite, an automatic credential for being old. This morning, a commercial came on that scared me. I felt as if life was beginning to end for me. As if I needed to start watching my health. The advertisement was for Nick-at-Nite. The show wasn’t Lucy, Dick van Dyke, or Petticoat Junction. It wasn’t even for Charles or WKRP. … … It was for Home Improvement.
Truly, if four colored horses were to leap across the screen, it would not have startled me.

Next version of Windows: Call it 7

Microsoft is planning to ship its next major version of Windows--known internally as version "7"--within roughly three years, CNET News.com has learned.
The company discussed Windows 7 on Thursday at a conference for its field sales force in Orlando, Fla., according to sources close to the company.
While the company provided few details, Windows 7, the next client version of the operating system, will be among the steps taken by Microsoft to establish a more predictable release schedule, according to sources. The company plans a more "iterative" process of information disclosure to business customers and partners, sources said.
Windows Vista, the oft-delayed most recent release of Windows, shipped to businesses in November and to consumers in January after more than five years of development. Vista's gestation period was marked by shifting product details as internal priorities changed and problems arose with development.

Most of these ladies have no way into Jacksonville to buy the things they need.
I know that if I have to leave the county to buy the products I need, I will do my shopping there also.
I was told by a manager in Wal-Mart that if enough people called and complained they would put material in the store.
So, to all the people of Baker County: Will you please take a minute to call 1-800 WAL-MART (800-925-6278), and complain and pray that they hear the people of this county loud and clear?

You can try this at home, but remember to be safe.
In our last article, we completed the build of our PC. In this final entry of this series we are going to cover:
- Windows Installation
- Hardware Drivers
- Essential Software
- System Comparison
Initially, we chose Windows XP 64-bit Edition as our OS. Many of you may be wondering, "Why not Windows Vista". To put it simple, we feel that Windows Vista isn't ready yet. Windows Vista is still a brand new operating system, and many have had compatibility issues with it. The primary purpose of this PC is to help us get work done, so we want to make sure that all our programs will work.
Besides, our Windows XP Professional 64-bit Edition came with a coupon to upgrade to Vista whenever we want at half price. So we can always upgrade once things begin to settle down with Vista.
Now we are ready to turn on our PC for the first time. We power it on, and check the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System). The BIOS is the first system that runs when you boot up your computer. Even Name Brand computers have a BIOS. You may notice when you turn on your PC it might do a quick memory check, or give you the option to "Press F1 to enter setup". This is BIOS.
We go into BIOS and check our system configuration. The BIOS shows our RAM Capacity and Speed. It also shows our Processor Brand, Speed, and Temp. It even shows how fast our Fans are running.
It shows that the Hard Drive is connected as well as the DVD Drive. We also check to make sure that the "CD-ROM" drive is the first bootable drive.
Next, we hit the eject button on our DVD Drive to extend the tray, place our WinXPPro64 Disk in, and restart.

Online Advertising options Expanded

You may have noticed a few changes on the web-site. With Macclenny.com being the most popular web-site in Baker County, even besting some popular TV and Radio Station web-sites in Jacksonville, we thought it was time to expand our offerings in Online Advertising.
The first change is the "Leader Board" option.
Leader Board Banners are the same as Standard 468x60 Banners but have special placement at the top of every page on our site.
Unlike the Standard Banners that Change every 30 seconds, Banners on the Leader Board are static - meaning once they are displayed, they don't change unless the visitor to the site goes to another part of the site, or otherwises refreshes the page.

Live Free or Die Hard...The Die Hard franchise lives on
By Andrew Self In the 1980's, Director John McTiernan set out to create an action movie. For the Leading Role, he chose Arnold Schwarzenegger. John McTiernan thought he would be perfect for the job. Arnold of course, turned down the film. So the job was offered to John's #2 choice: Slyvester Stallone. Sly too turned it down, and the job was then offered to Burt Reyoles and Richard Gere. All of whom said no. But a rising actor named Bruce Willis said yes. It turned out to be a good move. It made Bruce Willis an international star, and created a whole new genre of Film Making - it was responsible for creating the "action star" archetype that is a far more fallible and human hero.

You can try this at home, but remember to be safe.
In our last article, we covered the installation of the CPU, Cooling Device, and the System Ram.
Now we are going to mount the motherboard in the case, install the add-in cards, as well as the disk drives.
To install the motherboard (MoBo) into the case, you will want to remove the side panel of the case. For us, that means we remove the panel with the window on it. With standard ATX Cases, the panel you will remove will be the Left Panel. If you are looking directly at the PC "head on", turn the PC so it faces the right. The side panel you are looking at is the one you will remove.
To begin, place the case on its side, so that the front is facing right, the back is facing left, and the bottom is closest to you.
Now you may want to remove the stock "Back Plate" from your case. "On Board" features vary from one MoBo to the next. Hence, the connections are not always in the exact same place, but they always take up the same amount of space. (some take up less, but they never exceed the atx standard).

Our MoBo came with its own back plate, and yours should too. Remove the Stock back plate and replace it with the one that came with your MoBo.
Next, carefully place your MoBo in the case and gently maneuver it until the connections on the MoBo line up with the Back plate. Now, press it against the Back plate until the pre-drilled holes in the MoBo line up with the mounting screws in the case.
The MoBo may want to "Spring" back as you will need to apply some pressure to keep in in place until you get the first couple of mounting screws in.
TIP: Use a Hand Powered Screw Driver instead of an electric one. You don't want to over-tighten the screws as you can damage the board if it is too tight. Screw them down until they are snug.
After you have securely fastened all the screws, the mounting process is complete.

Restaurant Review - Lyman Greens BBQ
|
|
..Posted on 18 Jun 2007
|
Don't let the For Sale Signs fool you! Lyman Green's BBQ is not for sale, only the property is on the market by it's owner, Ruth Green.
"If it were up to me, we would be in a fancy new building with a better location to serve our customers" says Owner Elizabeth. "Unfortunately, to do something like that would cost hundreds of thousands of Dollars, we are just a Mom and Pop place...not part of a national chain."
So for now, Lyman Greens is making due with what they have, serving up tasty Dishes using their secret recipes and homemade sauces. Speaking of which they currently have five sauces in labeled bottles or by the pint, quart, or gallon. They are also working on new creations that are soon to come!
Lyman Green's BBQ was started by Ruth Green with the help of her father, Lyman Green on April 19, 1972. Elizabeth and her husband, Michael Frigo took over the business on August 15, 1998. She has been running the place along side her father, Charles Lyman Green, Jr., her brother in law Ted Frigo (Manager), and brother, Charles Lyman Green, III ever since.
Their Full Featured Menu has everything from Kids Meals to Catering options, and everything in between. And apparently they have some of the best burgers around in town as they sell a lot of them.
But now, lets talk about the food! Many patrons of Lyman Green's are long time regulars. And they keep coming back for a reason, the Food is simply Awesome. New comers to Macclenny are also getting in on the action.
For our review, we selected to go with a Turkey Sandwich. In some cases, the Turkey can be dried out from the cooking process, but not this turkey! It was tender and juicy and has Lymans Signature smoke flavor. We added a little of their "Original House" BBQ Sauce, And we can honestly say this is one of the best BBQ Sandwiches we have ever had. You can get a turkey melt, which is served hot or just get it cold. Either way you'll love it!

Time Machine: 10 Years of Macclenny.com

In the summer of 1996, Pat Cobb was working in the back of the office of the Computer Repair shop that she owned.
At the time, the Internet was Still New. In fact, the fledgling America Online was barely a year old with only a handful of cities in its Coverage Area.
But that didn't stop Pat! She had a feeling that this "Internet" thing, was the wave of the future and jumping on that bandwagon early would be key.
Back then, "Shopping From Home" was done either two ways: A TV Shopping Channel, or a Catalogue. If you wanted to get Directions, you had to use "2-D Navigation".. the Fold out Paper Map. And listening to Music was either on CD or Cassette Tape. Mp3 Players did not exist.
28.8 Dial-up Was the Standard Internet Connection for Home Users. And if you were lucky enough to have the latest technology, your friends would envy you as you connected at a blazing speed of 33.6 Baud. It would be several years before Broadband - Cable or DSL - would emerge and begin to replace Dial-up.
Even Fast Connections between major companies were few and far between. When Ford Motor Company wanted to send updates of their Vehicles Computer Models between buildings (sometimes in different cities) they relied on the US Postal Service. They would Burn their work onto a CD, and mail it priority to the other facility. The CD Burner by the way, could only burn at 1x speed, and cost the company over $50,000!
Nevertheless, Pat had a hunch that the Internet was the next big thing. She was right. Early in 1997 she decided to build a web-site for the Community. Using a very early release of Microsoft FrontPage, Pat began working on the site and uploaded the first versions to her Free Web-Space that came with her AOL Account. It was only Text Based, but it was a start.

The 2007 Hurricane Season - Are you Ready?
|

..Posted on 16 Jun 2007
|
By Shari Reneau of the Home Town Journal.
As of June 1st, Hurricane season has officially began full force, so to speak. Will you be ready when they tell us to batten down the hatches, have you plenty of water and batteries?
That’s just the beginning of the list. How prepared are you? I personally, have seen first hand what these magnificent and powerful storms can do (Hurricane Andrew`92 and Hurricane George `98).
When you think you have everything you need, check that list again. As we all witnessed whether it be through family, friends or the media, Hurricane Katrina, proved to us all that a storm of such extreme force and fury as she was, can be as unpredictable as the regular weather.
On May 9th of this year there was sub-tropical storm Andrea, as the first named storm, but on Friday June 1st tropical storm Barry officially started off the season as it blew winds of 45 miles per hour and poured some much needed rain into our area.
The 2007 Atlantic hurricane season, forecasters have predicted, will be more active than normal. The Colorado State University team of experts under forecast pioneer William Gray, informed us last week that there will be an above average of 17 to 21 storms in the 2007 hurricane season, saying nine would grow to hurricane strength. Of those nine, five will grow into major hurricanes of Category 3 or higher with winds over 110 mph. Over the months some of these facts may change slightly, but we still must pay attention to all the information we receive.

After a bit of a delay, we are ready to continue our PC Build. At this point we have honed in on all the parts to our new computer and have them ready to go. We are ready to start building our computer!

The first step in this phase, is to make sure you have a clean working area. Clean off a table or work bench, make sure there are no drinks or liquid that can get on the componets, and wear a short-sleeved shirt (to avoid static).
Once you have an area set aside, you can start the build.
First, you need to open the case to expose the inside (of course).
Most computer cases will have pre-drilled holes on the panel where you will mount the Motherboard. However, you will need to install the Metal Riser Mounts first (usually made of Brass).
These mounts are needed for two reasons. First, they keep the Motherboard from making contact with the Metal Case, and second they provide air-flow between the back of the case and the bottom of the Motherboard.
DO NOT Try to mount the Mother Board without using the riser mounts!
With the Motherboard being the "Mother of All Boards" you would think you would install it first. And that is common practice.
But through our experience we find it eaiser to do it a bit differently. Once you have the motherboard installed, you will then be working from inside the case (sometimes a bit cramped). However, with the Motherboard exposed, you can access the CPU socket, and RAM Slots much eaiser. So we are going to do that first.

Have A Blast At The Beaches

Have A Blast At The Beaches This Summer…But Don’t Forget Your Sun Screen.
You know that old Florida sun can be quite treacherous this time of the year. So please use caution whenever or wherever you choose to spend your time out in it.
Summer would not be complete without some of our weekends being spent out by the beaches, and the importance of using Sunscreen should be right up there with our beach gear of bathing suits, Oakley shades, and flip flops, oh, and don’t forget the radio.
The proper hydration for your body on the outside is as important as the amount of water you place on the inside, to keep you from dehydration. Try to stay away from sugary drinks; this only leads your body to crave what it needs in the first place, drinking water.
Your skin works the same way and needs that moisture from the sunscreen lotion to absorb and drink from it. Even if you don’t spend your time by the water, and you choose to spend it in your backyard gardening, barbequing, or even just laying on your hammock under the ole shade tree, you will want to still use plenty of sunscreen.
Now more than ever it seems that Skin Cancer is on the rise, so don’t increase your chances by not taking an extra five minutes to soak yourself in sunscreen, after a few hours in the sun you’ll be glad you did. On today’s market, sunscreen comes in a variety of choices, everything from Panama Jack to Banana Boat, and my personal favorite Coppertone.

The Unofficial Tech Support/Client Translator’s Guide
|
|
..Posted on 25 May 2007
|
By: J. Harding
Forward:
Thank you for choosing us to assist you in your recent desire to learn to expand your communication skills. Certainly, just as with any other language barrier that you may have a conflict in overcoming, the technical terms and jargon used by many Technical Support Professionals can be hard to decipher. In addition, certain phrases and requests by Tech Support, while worded to be meant one way, is intended to be something completely different. It’s a language built upon a cultural difference, much like Castilian is to Spanish. (Also, Cajun to Bostonian.) I have designed this manual for the technical layman in hopes that communications between they and the technical professionals would become smoother, resulting in less of a dependency of technicians to aspirin (as well as vice versa). While some of the terms herein may be familiar to you, we are writing this from the lowest level of understanding in hopes to reach the most people with the translation.
Section I: Terminology of the Computer – Input Devices/Hardware.
Hardware: An object related to the operation of your computer that you can physically touch. (Important Note: The key word above is can. We, in no way, recommend attempting or trying to touch all possible hardware as, many times, this would cause irreparable damage to the computer – See CPU below.)
Keyboard: The object which has letters and numbers, known as ‘keys’, individually arrayed on a (mostly) rectangular board—thus—keyboard.
Mouse: The object that you move around with your hand which, concurrently, makes the ‘little arrow’ move around on the monitor. (Note: A ‘little arrow’ is used with the assumption that you haven’t changed the mouse set to bizarre and obscure figures yet.)
Monitor: The object, closely resembling a television screen, where the actions you make with the keyboard and mouse (see above) appear. If you are unfamiliar with the functions of the buttons at the bottom, please do not touch them unless directed by a professional tech support consultant.
Printer: The large object, usually located away from the computer itself, that contains paper and whose main/sole purpose is to ‘print’ words and/or pictures on it. If your call to tech support involves this object, we strongly suggest either listening very carefully to directions or, if necessary, find another person nearby who is more ‘tech savvy’ than you.
Cable: Cord, usually of a different color than, say, your average vacuum cleaner power cord. 90% of the time, this ‘cord’, if defined as such, will be blue or gray.
Modem: A device that, under most circumstances, you will not be able to see or touch, which should remain that way should you have to question what this is. In short, this device allows your computer to ‘call’ another computer, not unlike you would to a best friend. (The loud noise it makes in connecting would no doubt be another similarity.)
CPU: (aka Tower, Box) The brains of the computer. Generally, this will be under or to the side of your desk and, in general, is the thing that has a number of cords and cables (see above for definition) running into it. Consider opening up said device a death warrant to ever getting it to work again, unless directly and specifically authorized by a tech representative, in which case, follow his words to the letter.
( Editors Note: The acronym for CPU Stands for Central Processing Unit. The Actual CPU is a small chip inside the computer [about 1x1 inch square]. However, the term CPU has been widely accepted ouside of tech circles as reference the entire box or tower )
Section II: Terminology Continued – Software, OS-specific terms.
Software: Usually, a computer program or file that does something (i.e. Solitaire, which no doubt constituted 50% of your computer usage). These programs are ‘written’ on what is known as your Hard Drive, a microchip inside your CPU (See above).
Driver: A computer file that allows the computer to do what you want it to do. If you ever hear the word driver used by tech support, immediately inform the tech support that you have no idea what this is and that you will be more than happy to relinquish control of the computer to someone more knowledgeable than you.
OS: (Operating System) If tech support ever asks you which Operating System you are using, the correct answer would be Windows. God help us all if you were on Linux and didn’t know it.
Windows: Microsoft’s default Operating System (see above). Also the term given for the frame around a program running (i.e. Solitaire—we’ll keep running with this example). Many times, the term window is referring to not only the box-frame around the program, but also the contents inside. (Example: “Please close the Solitaire window” will actually close the entire game out.)
Start: The button, generally found at the bottom-left of a Windows-based system that contains the word “Start”. (Exceptions to this statement would be if you found the ‘neat trick’ involving moving the task bar to other corners of the screen.) To access the start menu, simply move the mouse cursor (see mouse, Section I) until it is over the button, where you will press the left-most button on the top of the mouse.
Taskbar – The (generally) blue strip across the (generally) bottom of your screen (see Start). This will show you whether or not you have any active windows (see above), regardless if you can see them or not.
Desktop: (Note: This is not, in computer terminology, where your keyboard is located.) What you are looking at on your monitor when there are no active windows. This, usually, has icons (little pictures) organized in some fashion. This also is where you would have put a picture of your sickingly cute pet or family member, usually obscuring said icons.
Section III: Terminology Concluded – Media and Media Devices
Media: Something you can put in your computer that you can ‘write’ information to and take it out. Recognizable examples are CDs, disks, and flash drives… Well, just stick with CDs.
Disk Drive/CD Drive: Where you put your CD or disk into the computer. Depending on how old your computer is and the type of disks you are using, there are different methods of putting in and taking out media:
CD Drive: There should be a button on the bottom right (sometimes bottom left) of the drive. Push the button and a tray will come out resembling a cup holder. Place the CD, shiny-side down, into the tray and either apply slight pressure to the front of the tray (pushing in) or re-pushing the open button. Latter option recommended.
3.5” Disk Drive: 3.5” disks are small, hard, and square. There should be a slot with a ‘swingie-type door’ on the front, should you have a 3.5” disk drive. The disk goes in with the shiny metal slide facing into the computer. Once in, a small button near the slot will pop out. This is the eject button. Press to eject.
5.25” Disk Drive: … You know what… they don’t make these anymore, so I’ll just skip this one.
Media Player: Windows Media Player. (See OS, Section II)
Speakers: Hardware (see section I) that involves putting out sound, just like your stereo speakers. Most problems with speakers that involve tech support will involve knowledge of drivers. Please reread instructions for this situation under Drivers, Section II.

Glass Houses
By: Blake Thomas
In case you haven’t been following the recent Don Imus on air debacle, then here it is in a nutshell.
During an on-air conversation with his radio talk show producer Bernard McGuirk, the week of April 9th. Imus and his producer were involved in some on air banter when they used several tasteless remarks to describe the Rutgers’ women’s basketball team following their loss to the now national champions Tennessee Volunteers.
I want to remind my readers who might not know, Imus has made his living with this so called shock jock mentality for his entire career. Some credit Imus as being the original shock jock, even before the likes of Howard Stern rose to fame.
With past comments like calling former Secretary of State Colin Powell a "weasel," New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson a "fat sissy", he once referred to Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell of Colorado, an American Indian, as "the guy from `F Troop.'", and he has even called the New York Knicks a group of "chest-thumping pimps." Should any of us really be too surprised?
Shame on you Imus! Using this opportunity to push the limits of talk radio, only to try and garner an extra rating point so you might bolster your 14th share position. He has apologized, and has now, as of this last week, paid the ultimate price by losing his method in which he makes his livelihood. All of this without any sanction posed by the FCC. This situation as far as I’m concerned should be over, but those that choose to continue to use this event as a way to have their 15 minutes of fame won’t let it go.

IMHO - 5 Reminders for Macclenny Drivers
|
|
..Posted on 11 Apr 2007
|
By: J. Harding
It has come to the attention of many residents of Baker County that Macclenny is growing by leaps and bounds. With new stores on the front-burner, ready to be built (as well as those freshly built, such as our new Wal-Mart Supercenter), we are looking less and less like the small town, backwoods community we used to be. This has been good for many things. But, it has also brought certain unavoidable (and obvious) annoyances.
My primary annoyance is the somewhat amazing circumstance that some of Baker County's residents somehow forgot how to drive. They obviously know enough to pass the state's requirements to have a license (or did at one time). However, this would amount the knowing the different of green and red.
Now, I'm not saying everyone, or even the majority, of drivers in Macclenny are borderline maniacal. In fact, I'd even go so far to say that I encounter one or two 'sane' drivers on my way to work every morning. I know that most vehicle operators intend to drive safely and correctly, but I believe the pressures of a growing community, and subsequent growing number of cars and (especially) trucks, has caused even the levelest-headed person to become like Spongebob Squarepants driving a boat. Even I have been guilty of this from time to time. Therefore, I set aside a few minutes of my day today to compile a brief reminder to help us contemplate how we drive. And who knows--maybe this will save someone from getting a 'reckless endangerment' driving ticket.
1) Speed is relative-The signs usually help a little. When I started driving, Highway 121 was 35 MPH all the way past US 90 and practically to the fair grounds. Someone was kind enough to notice we have more lanes now and helped out by increasing the speed limit to 45. So class, everyone repeat with me now. ----45 MPH.---- Not 20 MPH. Not 60 MPH. Though we can easily pass or dodge to compensate for these extremes, it makes things a little easier to go if we just follow the signs. This, by extension, also includes that stretch of 121 by the schools. Did you know that it gets slower there? Amazing. Who'd have thought that places where kids cross the road multiple times throughout the day have speed decrements. The above rule can be applied here too. Best rule of thumb: watch for those white rectangular signs.
2) Lane Definitions--What the yellow lines mean. Once upon a time, if a Macclenny driver saw yellow, it meant one of two things: A yellow light meant slow down (or speed up for some of us), and a yellow line meant "Do Not Cross" unless you are turning in to someplace on your left-hand side. Then along came the turning lane. An entire stretch of 8 to 10 feet wide concrete that drivers could actually use to prepare to turn in to a left-hand side place. However, this has obviously confused some people. For instance, the turning lane is not a PARKING SPACE. It's reasonable to expect sometimes a person has to go "half way" because of the bulk of traffic. However, much like the Basketball Shot Clock, you are expected to do SOMETHING after so long. It's a tad unreasonable if you're coming out of Wal-Mart turning left to make sure it's clear back to Waffle House before getting back into the flow of traffic. As a corollary, however, I would prefer you not pull out in front of me so that I have to (once again) test my Anti-Lock Braking System (tm). Once again, balance is needed. And for the love of God, please do not pass me in the turning lane!

Hello fellow Macclenny.com visitors. I wanted to take a few minutes to introduce myself on here. Just call me Jack.
I've recently done some tongue-in-cheek (adj. - somewhat sarcastic, but not really) articles based on my opinionated observations, mostly concerning technology and things that irk me. While most readers of them would probably consider me a whiny jerk, I feel that there are more individuals than just I who would agree on the driving conditions around Baker County or perhaps the inadequacy of Telemarketers and Customer Service Reps. (Mostly though, these are just my rants after being irritated by such occurrances.)

How to Build a PC - Part 4

Our computer is almost complete. Just 1 more piece of Hardware and then we can start the actual build.
What's left, the Video Subsystem.
You may be asking yourself about the Audio, or Network components for this computer. Before we get into the video subsystem, we will talk about that.
The Audio and Networking capabilities of this computer are found right on the motherboard. The Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe has a TON of features that were touched on in an earlier article. We will go into more detail here.
We discussed the SATA features, which gives it the ability to have high-speed hard drives in the system. But other features are also "On Board".
On Board devices are components that are integrated onto a motherboard. So if you have "On Board Sound", you don't need to purchase a "Sound Card" to have audio functions. Other "On Board" devices include Modems, USB Connections, Networking, and Video.
Our system comes equipped with On Board Sound, and Dual Giga-Bit Network Ports. It also has OnBoard Wireless Networking. Although this PC and most desktops generally don't make use of wireless networking as they don't travel, it is still a good security feature. How so?
We can configure the system to connect to our internal network with a standard Category 5 (Cat5) Network Cable. Our office is also equipped with wireless access points so when visitors come they can connect as well.
With any wireless connection there is the risk of a security breach. Sometimes people will try to "Steal" your signal to get internet access. And sometimes people try to use wirless connections that do not belong to them to perform illegal activities. Doing so makes it very hard to track down the actual culprit.
We will be configuring the wireless features on our PC to work as a "Guard Dog". It will be setup to "Sniff" for any other wireless devices attempting to access our network without authorization.
The Motherboard does not feature onboard Video, but that is okay with us. Although Onboard video has made great strides in recent years, it still has limited abilities.
For example, if you have onboard Video and your system comes with 512 MB of Ram, chances are when you look at your system resources it will only show you as having 504 MB of Ram. This is because your computer must "Share" the system memory with your onboard video. 8 MB of that memory has been reserved for your Video, so you can't get it back.
Also to process the video, the task is assigned either to your CPU your Chipset, and sometimes Both. Thus adding a rather heavy task to your CPU (or chipset) and in turn making your PC run a bit slower.

So far we have covered most of the key components: Motherboard, CPU, and RAM. Next we will discuss the Storage Device (Hard Drive) and the means of getting data onto that device (CD/DVD-ROM Drive).
The Hard Drive we wanted had to have plenty of Disk Space, and had to be fast as well.
The Hard Drive connects directly to the Mother Board. Slightly older technology that is still in use today had a means of connecting the Hard Drive to the Mother Board through an "Ribbon Cable". A term known as ATA (Advance Technology Attachment, also known as IDE or ATAPI).
It is that Ribbon Cable that connects your Hard Drive to the Mother Board. You could get what is called ATA133, meaning it could transfer 133 mb of data per second over the IDE Cable.
Although the ASUS Motherboard we selected is "Backwards Compatible" with ATA (meaning it can make use of older technology) it also supports a new standard known as "SATA" (Serial ATA). Our Motherboard makes use of the newest SATA 3.0 GB/S". This basically means that it can transfer data from the hard drive into the memory (and vice versa) at 300 MB/S! Much faster than ATA133.
So, when selecting our hard drive, we wanted to make sure we exploited this new technology, and did the same with our DVD/CD-RW Drive.
The Hard Drive we selected is a 250 GB Drive from Western Digital. Western Digital (WD) is one of the hard disk leaders. They also provided Hard Disk's for the original xbox video game console (although sometimes Samsung drives were also used). Having a hard disk in a game console is a testamate to its durability.

In our last article, we discussed the Processor and the one we chose was the Dual-Core AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+.
Next up, the Motherboard.
Because Intel and AMD do not share motherboards (You cannot install an AMD Chip into an Intel Motherboard, and vice versa.) this eliminated any Intel Motherboards out there, and thus made our decision making easier.
This is why it is a good idea to decide on a Processor first.
Why do they call it a motherboard? Quite simply because it is the Mother of all Boards! All Components in your computer connect to it. It is the very foundation that your computer is built on. If you want to make upgrades to your computer in the future, it will likely depend on how stout the motherboard is.
Because of the weight of this decision, we took extra time in looking at what we needed, and what our budget was.
After careful searching, we finally settled on the motherboard that provided the features that we wanted: Plenty of power now, plenty of room to upgrade down the road, and something that wouldn't take too much out of our budget.
Our Selection: Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe.

At Macclenny.com, we have been writing and reporting on items in the Tech industry since our beginning.
We recently decided to make some upgrades in terms of our PCs. We searched the market for some Name Brand computers, but those that we found with the hardware that we wanted were - to us - way over priced.
And for the ones that fit into our budget may satisfy some of our needs now, they didn't have everything we need, nor were they upgrade friendly in the future.
So what to do? We decided to build our own workhorse computers, and take our readers along for the ride!
This will be a multi-part article covering the various steps in building a quality PC from the ground up.

Franchisee Jason Motley plans to open the new quick-casual fried chicken restaurant in April. Since 2000, the Jacksonville metropolitan area has seen an average of almost two new locations open each year. The new restaurant, located at 1500 S. "We are pleased to offer Macclenny residents their first Zaxby's location," said Motley, whose family ran a restaurant in Macclenny for six years.

As I see it... By Blake Thomas

It’s 2:00am and I can’t sleep because the neighbor’s dog is out again, and now mine won’t stop barking at the living room window. I decided I’m up I’ll just jot a few thoughts down and get a jump on some work. Just now I can hear the burning of rubber from some drunk I’m sure, who has decided to terrorize the neighborhood by speeding through every stop sign and power sliding through every turn. I’m just waiting now for the sounds of crashing metal for when he decides to careen into someone’s parked car.
What is it about a person who doesn’t feel the need to be responsible for his or her own actions? What makes a man or a woman tick, when he or she does not care enough to be thoughtful of others? Better yet, why do I always try to do those things that I’m supposed to do, mind you not perfect, but an overwhelming sense or desire to be civil, polite, and courteous of my fellow man’s time and space? God forbid, I’m even teaching my children this insane principle, why? What is it that keeps me from taking it to the street one time and just letting go?

Daylight-savings time fiasco
|
|
..Posted on 16 Feb 2007
|
This year, daylight-savings time starts early (March 10th). This change could pose serious Y2K like headaches for both IT professionals and consumers alike.
Congress decided in 2005 to extend the period of daylight-saving time by three weeks in spring and one in the fall, reasoning that providing more daylight in the early evening would reduce energy use. However, the shift could cause trouble with software set to automatically advance its clock by an hour on the old date, the first Sunday in April, and not on the new date, the second Sunday in March.
What does this effect? Every electronic Device in the United States, Canada, as well as Bermuda that has an internal clock. This includes VCR's, DVR's, Telephones, PDA's, Computers, Laptops and some Cell Phones.
Computer software calendar and scheduling applications such as Outlook, Exchange, Lotus Notes, or third party calendars are also affected.
"We've been aware of the DST changes since late last year. But the tools and patches keep changing, or weren't available, which made it difficult to create a solid plan," said Warren Byle, a systems engineer at an insurance company. "This change might go smoothly for those who are prepared, but I think it will be the 'Y2K that wasn't' for the rest."
